Kids Posting Fliers Charged with Hate Crime

Hate crimes laws are not supposed to be applied to things that are covered under free speech, but a Crystal Lake, Illinois, case is testing that limit. Police in that Chicago suburban community charged two teenage girls with a felony hate crime for distributing fliers with anti-gay statements at the Crystal Lake South High School. The fliers showed a "photograph of two males kissing and included 'words of an inflammatory nature," according to police, as reported in the Chicago Tribune.
